I wasn't a cyclist until I was in my 40's. At that time I was teaching Japanese at the University of Oregon and driving a mile each way work (!) Commuting by bike did not even occur to me. When I received a research grant to go to Japan, I decided to buy a folding recumbent- a SatRDay - which I found online. Over the next 3 years I spent my vacations touring Hokkaido, Mt. Fuji and Tokyo. I also met and rode with many passionate Bike Friday riders in Japan. In 2003 I began working as Bike Friday's 'Ambassador to Asia.' I got a Pocket Crusoe for commuting, then a Pocket Rocket Pro to keep up with the BF lunch ride and event rides. Now I commute 5 miles on my Express tikit or Speeding tikit to support Bike Friday's challenge to 'get out of the driver's seat and onto a bike.'
