FYEye: Pack 'n' Play

November 2000 by none

Sure, your bike has super suspension, a sleek frame and fits to within an inch of your taut behind. But can it pack up in an overnight bag and take Manhattan? With up to 27 gears and a titanium beam suspension frame, the AirFriday (starting at $2,095) is just one of more than a dozen high-performance cycles by Bike Friday of Eugene, Oregon. All Bike Fridays either fold up or break down to be packed in a suitcase--even the tandems and recumbents. Yet unlike most rinky-dink small-scalers they're sturdy, durable and custom-built to fit the rider--from 4'6" to 7'1". Touring models use 406 mm wheels; racing and performance bikes have 451's. The quick-folding, 24-gear New World Tourist ($995) comes in a rolling suitcase. The AirGlide touring bike ($1,695) has a titanium beam suspension frame; the AirLlama mountain bike ($2,295) has full suspension; and the Family Triple Traveler ($1,895) carries two adults and a child.
