** Bike Friday ** back in 5th Place as at June 25, 2005 Slo Jo Keenan is an avid Bike Friday owner, and while sunning himself in sandy Qatar, he came up with a neat idea: for Bike Friday owners to log their training miles on the free BikeJournal.com website. Registrations started pouring in suddenly Bike Friday was in the top ten membership groups, with 40+ members. Desert Campers note: this is the perfect place to log those miles that Lon is going to put you through! At the time of writing Slo Jo is also showing Bike Friday's at-large mascot Robinson the Adventurous Otter a good time ...

UPDATE June 2005 from Slo Jo Keenan, jkeenan0407 at yahoo dot com

**BIKE FRIDAY** BACK IN 5th PLACE!

Looks like a bunch of folks posted miles and the club added a new member who contributed a bulk entry of 3,500 miles putting us over 7,000 miles ahead of the team in sixth place. Nicely Done. Thank You.

LOG MILES WIN A FOLDING BIKE RACK or a BIKE FRIDAY T-SHIRT/SOCKS.

A Bike Friday Folding Rear Rack will be given away on December 20th, 2005 to a lucky rider who has logged at least 2,000 miles. Consider it an incentive to enjoy riding your Bike Friday a tad more than you might have otherwise and a Christmas Present for putting the Bike Friday name amongst the top clubs.

The bike rack was donated by Bike Friday and I'll contribute a T-shirt or two or maybe socks. Those who ride any mileage from one mile up to 1,999 miles will be eligible for the T-Shirt or socks. I'll probably donate two, since it'll be the Christmas season. What about "Private Milers?" Simple: Bike Journal is based on the honor system. Anyone could log 8,000 stealth miles and no one would be the wiser, but me thinks the great majority of cyclists are special and honest. So, any "Private" cyclist can simply email me on December 19th and say: "Hey Slo Joe, I did log over 2,000 miles." or "Hey Slo, put me in the drawing for the T-Shirt or Socks.". It's that simple. Ron Neher, r26988 on BJ, by the way had the original idea for a give-away. Thank you Ron!!

BIKE FRIDAY CLUB LEADERS SPREAD THE WORD

I'll send a separate email as there may be Bike Friday owners in your riding club who don't subscribe to YAK. Tell them about the '**Bike Friday**' club on www.bikejournal.com

ROBINSON IS READY FOR ANOTHER ADVENTURE

Robinson has been with me over in Qatar and is now back in the US of A. If anyone wants to take Robinson on a tour or journey, email me at JKeenan0407 AT Yahoo DOT com Otherwise, Robinson is heading with me to Oregon to do the Cycling Oregon Week-end from Portland to Eugene (Home of BF). This ride commemorates the opening of the Scenic Bikeway. Yours truly plans to do a double sometime over the summer to get to the Bike Friday headquarters at about the time they start their noon ride.

FOUR SCORE AND SEVEN ………well not quite, but we do have four score members in the **Bike Friday** club at www.bikejournal.com, a friendly website that provides cyclists an online journal for logging miles and ride information.

The site has features which help motivate cyclists to increase their mileage and to find out where they stand in relation to the 4,000 plus members of the site. The website publishes the '5' top mileage cyclists on the Home page, then followed by a group showing where you stand in relation to others near you. A nice approach as you get to see the top mileage cyclists and where you and those near you are ranked.

There are various ways to view information including an area where the clubs can be viewed as to the total mileage ridden by members in the club. Shortly after starting the **Bike Friday** club, 30 members joined and moved the **Bike Friday** club into the top 10. Currently membership stands at 40 Bike Friday owners with members from Quebec, Australia, England, Qatar and the good ol' US of A.

The Other Computer You Need To Log Your Progress on BIKEJOURNAL.COM: The Cateye 7 Cordless Computer

Walter Computer

YOUR JOURNAL STARTS AT 0 MPH: Bike Friday Sales Consultant Walter Lapchynski shows you the computer you need to track your progress. "For $46 it has Average Speed, Distance, Max Speed, Trip Time, Odometer, Clock, Auto On/Off and a toolless installation - what more could you want?" Order one NOW from service@bikefriday.com, or call Service on 1-877-305-4140.

Walter says, "There are 3 reasons to join to join Bike Journal: 1) It's a personal training resource - for you to journal your statistics and track your progress over time and different conditions 2) It's a social resource, that not only allows you to meet other Bike Friday owners, but other cyclists and clubs near you, or where you might be traveling with your Bike Friday and 3) By helping the Bike Friday club compete with other clubs around the world, not just locally, it gives credence to Bike Friday as a REAL BIKE ..."

And of course, Walter and the Bike Friday Sales Team like that last idea very much! Pictured in the background is none other than Fred Matheny of www.RoadBikeRider.com, who will again be coaching at Bike Friday Desert Camp. Register now!

Members log information is kept confidential and a member has the option of keeping the total miles ridden as private or showing all members the miles ridden and jumping into the ranking pool. A feature many may find helpful is that the journal can be exported. In addition, there is a forum feature and a weekly chat session.

Members were asked why they joined and Bike Friday New World Tourist owner Dean Wisleder may have expressed most of the sentiments of the Bike Friday owners who signed up. Dean said: 'I joined primarily because I saw it as a motivator to get me riding on days like today (cold, damp, heavy fog, threat of rain). Now that I have been a member for all of four days an logged two rides, it's even more of a motivator than I expected. After today's ride of 24 miles, my standing for the year jumped from 500+ to 312.

Dean further added: '….it's one thing to have a private log book on a shelf in my garage, and quite another to have my mleage on the Bike Journal website for the entire world to see.' Another Bike Friday owner replied: 'I’m a sucker for statistics!'.

I heard about this site from a friend of mine, Jose Hernandez, from south Florida, who later was interviewed for an article in the Sun Sentinel by Nick Sortal. Jose has ridden my Bike Friday Sat R Day and vowed to buy one some day. Here’s an except from the article:

Hernandez, 53, says the best motivation for cyclists is riding in groups, but the site can be a help. He missed his goal of 3,500 miles this year and is working on his plan for 2005. '….setting goals is a great motivation tool for many things even beyond health,' he says. 'But it's a neat site and it helps you compare yourself to others.' The complete Sun Sentinel article can be read here.

All Bike Friday owners are welcome to join the **Bike Friday** club at www.bikejournal.com For more information, feel free to write to me at Jkeenan0407 at yahoo dot com.

THANKS Slo Jo for being a great Bike Friday mover and shaker!
