PRP Terry de Campo Desert Camp 05

Terry with his trusty Pocket Rocket Pro, on Desert Camp 2005 - still at the head of the pack in 2009!

Terry is one of Bike Friday's biggest referrers, getting a ton of his pals in the medical profession to join the Fold. We caught up with him at a PACTOUR camp in Arizona, 2009

I'd bet my best Friday you're the only Tereul on our 35,000 person database. What's the story behind the name?

Both Terry or Teruel will do it. Teruel is the name of city in Spain - very famous during the middle ages for poetry.  My father, who was into literature and poetry, chose it instead of asking me first:o)

What do you do off a Friday?

I'm an anaesthesiologist in Denver.

You're still riding that same Pocket Rocket Pro we saw you with at the inaugural Bike Friday Desert Camp 2004!

It's a great bike. I just did PACTOUR's Week 4, Chiricahua Challenge. The Bike Friday went faster than a lot of high end bikes. You can quote me on that.

Your favorite place to ride, and why?

Borrego Spring, near San Diego, CA. I've been going there every year for 15 years, with my bike club or my wife Erika (also a Bike Friday owner).

Here's why it's my favorite place:

1. It's immune to bad weather- that stops at the mountains.

2. You can ride many different rides from the hotel.

3. A lot of climbing. You can go from the desert to the top of Mt Palomar

4. Pretty areas to ride and visit like Julian. Super interesting rides around Julian!

5. From the Hotel to the Cuyacama Park and loop is a very pretty ride.

6. Nice places to hang out on Borrego Springs itself. Many accommodations,  from the fancy Casa del Zorro to cheap motels.

I arrive at San Diego airport, go to Cajon, and ride there for 4 hours. There are many great rides around Cajon. Then I drive to Borrego and ride from there every day except one. For that day I drive to Lake Hanshaw and do a loop including Pala mission and Temecula.

Last wish?

I'd love some Friday folks to join me in Borrego - I'm going there April 18 to 25, 2009, staying at Palm Canyon Resort, 90 bucks a double. For the second year in a row I'm going solo - everyone had other things booked. The climbs are incredible and scenic. Someone join me!
